An educator externship is a significant out-of-school
work experience for which the educator is paid. Through
externships, educators gain knowledge and experience in
business and industry settings. The primary purpose of
an externship is to influence those who write, promote,
or support curricula to make curricular changes that will
help students make connections between school, work, and
the community.
Externships are not job shadows; the educator does more
than "shadow" another worker. During externships,
the educator performs actual work that benefits the business
or industry.
